CONOWINGO DAM ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF FOURTH ANNUAL BALD EAGLE PHOTO CONTEST

Photographers from across the region participate in photo contest

DARLINGTON, MD (Feb.26, 2014) – The banks of the lower Susquehanna River below the Conowingo Hydroelectric Generating Station at Fisherman’s Park is one of the best places in the United States to view the Bald Eagle.  Each day local photographers gather along the river bank, camera at the ready to capture the flight of the American Bald Eagle in action.  Exelon Generation, the owner and operator of Conowingo, recently held its fourth annual photo contest to help highlight the beauty of the bald eagle and highlight awareness of the importance the region plays in the existence of the bald eagle in a natural environment.

The winners of the 4th Annual Conowingo Bald Eagle Photo contest are:

  • Second place - “Flying Upriver” John Renard, York, PA   
  • Third place - “That is my Fish”, Huzhong Cai, Forest Hills, NY
  • Fourth place - “Don’t Even Thing About it”, Brian Kushner, Audubon, NJ  
  • People’s Choice Award – “Eagle Walking on Water”, Jeannie Zurich
  • Photographers Choice Award- “Eagle Winging”, Zhensheng Li , Baltimore, MD

More than 180 photographs of the bald eagle were submitted from local photographers who capture the majesty bird on film this past fall. A panel of five area volunteers agreed to take on the challenge of judging the contest. After a tough decision, the judges narrowed the selection down to the top 12 entries before selecting the top three photos. The top 40 entries are currently on display at the Conowingo Visitor Center and the top six winner’s framed photos will be displayed at the Visitor Center for a year. This year, the contest added a “People’s Choice Award” category to the contest attracting more than 3,200 online followers to cast 2,600 votes for their favorite picture.  In addition to the photos being displayed at the Visitor Center they can be viewed at www.supportconowingodam.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SupportConowingoDam.

The Conowingo Visitor Center is located at 4948 Conowingo Road, Darlington, MD, and the photos can be viewed during normal center hours, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
