Conowingo Dam an under-appreciated treasure

My wife and I decided to revisit the Conowingo Dam as a tourist recently.

There is a small visitor center adjacent to a public swimming pool, what a fabulous facility. Nicole, an extremely knowledgable, motivated, and helpful person at the center, explained a variety of photographs in the displays and showed us the short video on fish lifts. Certainly a good value and very manageable stop. The pool is beautiful and well taken care of.

If you want to see bald eagles, this is the place to do it. Bring your camera and binoculars. There is a large parking lot and on a good day you can see bald eagles snatching a fish and flying.

Watch the action of the water going through the spillways and look for a variety of piscivorous birds. Just after a heavy rain storm, where lots of water comes down from Pennsylvania, we go there to watch the spray of water shooting a couple hundred feet from the dam.

Plenty of parking and restroom facilities are available during open hours, clean although, not heated. Port-a-potties available 24/7. Viewing docks are only accessible during warmer months, but they are in excellent shape and are wheelchair accessible. Picnic tables line the walkway along the river so you can view the birds and eat your lunch.

It's well worth a day trip for Cecil residents.
