We believe it is important to look at the relicensing of the Conowingo Dam in the context of the broader societal benefits that the project provides, as well as the specific resource goals. By way of context, the Conowingo Project alone provides the equivalent power for more than 160,000 households for a whole year and has avoided the burning of 2.8 million tons of coal in the past 10 years — enough to fill M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore four times. Calling for the removal of the dams is an overly simplistic solution to a complex resources management situation facing the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
